Dutch artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s painting titled The Fight Between Carnival and Lent is featured on the cover page of this issue. Renowned for his genre paintings, Bruegel, in this particular piece, illustrates the tensions present in village life through the ritual practices of the villagers. Specifically, this piece features the transitional period between Ordinary Time, and Lent, known as Carnival. The fight that is mentioned in the title of the painting is portrayed through the man on a beer barrel and Lady Lent on the cart. Personifying Carnival, the man is plump and surrounded by others who carry food and drink, while Lent takes the form of a pale slim woman seated on a cart with a scant amount of food for her followers. Bruegel’s 1599 piece is often considered a satirical take on the conflicts of the Protestant Reformation, since many protestant groups abandoned the Lenten observance, choosing instead to celebrate festively up until Easter.
